City enforcement agencies record 142 arrests

The successes included the confiscation of drugs, firearms and ammunition and more than 70 000 fines.
The City’s enforcement agencies made at least 142 arrests in the last week. Officers also impounded vehicles, cellphones, recovered drugs, firearms and ammunition and issued 70 902 fines.
Cape Town Traffic Service
Officers made 74 arrests, including 29 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 29 for reckless and negligent driving.
They impounded 158 vehicles, 87 cellphones and issued 63 658 fines.
Metro Police Department
Staff made 55 arrests, including 27 for the sale and/or possession of drugs, 20 arrests for other crimes including property crimes, domestic violence and fraud, three for reckless and negligent driving and five for driving under the influence of alcohol.
They also issued 3 751 fines for traffic and by-law transgressions.
One of those arrested for drunk driving was a 29-year-old woman, who collided with a Metro Police patrol vehicle in Mfuleni on Saturday, 7 November 2020.
On Wednesday, 4 November 2020, Metro Police officers responded to an active shooting incident in Manenberg. On arrival, the shooter ran away and threw the firearm into a crowd. The officers managed to recover the 9mm Parabellum before it could be removed from the scene, but the suspect got away.
Law Enforcement Department
The department made 13 arrests and issued 3 493 fines.
Yesterday morning, just after 08:00, Law Enforcement officers conducting patrols with SAPS in Nyanga conducted a stop and search of three men. One of them ran away, and officers gave chase.
They caught him and found him in possession of a 9mm firearm and six rounds of ammunition. The 25-year-old suspect was detained at Nyanga SAPS for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
‘Our staff recovered two firearms and nearly 300 rounds of ammunition in the last week. Then there was also the recovery of an imitation firearm. Whether real or fake, the fact is that guns are far too easily accessible and are being used to terrorise communities. Until the criminal justice system is able to find and effectively shut down the supply lines, we will continue to see the proliferation of firearms on our streets, and innocent lives lost as a result.
‘As for the situation on the roads, I am at my wits end. Week after week, we are seeing increasing numbers of arrests for drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving. As it is evident that the behaviour change will not happen willingly, the only other thing that could help is speedier convictions and heavier sentences,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
